Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Brent Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Brent is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety as an integral part of the way we operate.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our work. We will manage health and safety with the same diligence as other core aspects of our business. We will comply with applicable health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and relevant industry guidance, and we will seek to continually improve our standards.
Management Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management of Gardeners Brent. Management is responsible for implementing this policy, providing suitable resources and ensuring that effective arrangements are in place to protect workers and others from harm.
Management duties include establishing safe systems of work, organising appropriate supervision, ensuring that equipment and vehicles are properly maintained, arranging adequate training and instruction, and regularly reviewing performance. Managers will lead by example and promote a positive health and safety culture across all gardening and landscaping operations.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, whether permanent, temporary or seasonal, share responsibility for maintaining a safe workplace. Every employee must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Employees are expected to follow company procedures, use equipment and personal protective equipment correctly, and cooperate with management to enable compliance with legal and policy requirements. Any hazards, near misses, incidents or unsafe practices must be reported promptly so that corrective action can be taken.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before undertaking gardening or grounds maintenance tasks, we will identify and assess the risks associated with the work. This includes, where appropriate, risks arising from machinery and tools, manual handling, work at height, use of chemicals and pesticides, weather conditions, traffic movement and interaction with members of the public.
Risk assessments will be used to decide on suitable control measures and safe systems of work. These assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to work activities, equipment or locations.
Safe Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
Gardeners Brent will ensure that all work equipment, including hand tools, powered equipment and vehicles, is suitable for its intended purpose and maintained in safe working order. Defective or damaged equipment will be taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate machinery such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, shredders and other specialist equipment. Guards, safety devices and other protective features must never be removed or bypassed. Equipment will be stored and transported securely to prevent injury or damage.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening often involves lifting, carrying and repetitive physical tasks. We will minimise the risk of manual handling injuries by using mechanical aids where practicable, planning work to reduce unnecessary lifting and ensuring that loads are reasonable in size and weight.
Employees will be trained in safe lifting techniques, good posture and methods to reduce strain when digging, pruning, planting or moving materials. Work will be organised to allow adequate rest breaks and rotation of tasks wherever possible.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where gardening work involves the use of pesticides, fertilisers, fuels or other hazardous substances, Gardeners Brent will ensure that these are assessed and controlled in accordance with relevant regulations and product instructions.
Only competent personnel who have received appropriate information, instruction and training may handle and apply such substances. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, masks or coveralls will be provided as required and must be used correctly. Chemicals will be stored, transported, mixed, used and disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, helmets or respiratory protection, depending on the nature of the task.
Employees are required to use the protective equipment supplied, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged. Management will ensure that equipment is suitable, properly fitted and maintained.
Work at Height and Outdoor Conditions
Work at height, such as tree work, hedge trimming or gutter clearance, will be carefully planned and controlled. Appropriate access equipment, such as ladders or mobile platforms, will be selected and used in line with safe working practices. Improvised access is not permitted.
We recognise that gardening is carried out in varying weather and ground conditions. Work will be planned to minimise exposure to extreme temperatures, strong winds, lightning, heavy rain or icy surfaces, and may be postponed or adapted if conditions present unacceptable risk.
Public and Client Safety
Gardeners Brent will take steps to protect clients, visitors and members of the public from risks arising from our work. This includes segregating work areas wherever reasonably practicable, using warning signs or barriers as needed, managing vehicle movements safely and avoiding unnecessary obstruction of paths and access routes.
Noise, dust and debris will be controlled so far as reasonably practicable. On completion of work, sites will be left in a safe and tidy condition.
Training, Information and Supervision
We will provide employees with suitable health and safety training, instruction and information relevant to their role. This includes induction training for new starters, task-specific training for the use of machinery and chemicals, and refresher training when needed.
Supervision will be appropriate to the level of experience and competence of the employees involved, the complexity of the work and the risks presented. Less experienced staff will be closely supervised until they are deemed competent to work more independently.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported and recorded. Gardeners Brent will investigate such events to determine causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence. We will maintain suitable first aid arrangements and ensure that first aid supplies are readily available to workers.
Where necessary, incidents will be reported to the relevant enforcing authorities in accordance with legal requirements.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We will monitor our health and safety performance through regular inspections, audits and reviews of accidents and near misses. Feedback from employees and clients will be taken into account when evaluating the effectiveness of our arrangements.
This policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in operations or legislation, to ensure it remains current and effective. Updated versions will be communicated to all employees.
Policy Communication
The Gardeners Brent health and safety policy is available to all employees and to clients on request. Management is responsible for ensuring that everyone working for, or on behalf of, the company is aware of the contents of this policy and understands their responsibilities under it.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Gardeners Brent aims to maintain a safe, healthy and professional gardening service for all.
